Adding content in the left column in category pages

Can you not simply create new static blocks and assign them to the left column?

I created a CMS block called "Left Banner".

Now, how do I set it up to show up in the "left column of Category pages only".

I understand the "Indentifier" field is to show the positions.

What is the position name of the left column and how to show it on the Category pages only?
