I have copied product-list-item.phtml into my theme to hopefully make some changes. I want to dispaly an add to cart button and stock message.
Ive uncommented a few lines I found in this template but currently all products appear to be out of stock. Could this be something to do with a corresponding “on_sale =>$product->isSaleable() in the Data.php helper file?
Is this the recommended way to make changes to to the list item template?

Yes, the tweak you tried is fine, however it only handles simple Add to Cart button. We do support Add to Cart button with advanced function by integrating UB QuickView extension. You can learn more about this advanced feature at: http://layered-navigation.demo.ubertheme.com/women.html
