Child themes

Hi all

Can I just confirm there is NO way to future proof this theme as your template system doesn’t allow child themes which means I will need to modify your original files?

Not entirely certain what you are referring to . . . . can you be a bit more specific?

Yes sure.

If I want to make a change to /app/design/frontend/default/jm_book/template/page/html/jmtoolbar.phtml then I have to modify the original file in this location unlike a lot of themes that allow you to make a copy of a file in a sub (child) folder e.g. /app/design/frontend/default/mysubfolder_book/template/page/html/jmtoolbar.phtml

Having to change your / the theme’s source files is a recipe for disaster if we ever want to update our theme to the latest version you guys release

Hi keelrow,

It seems that what you’re mentioning is related to package(interface) of magento rather than theme. In package, it will have ability to inherit from parent theme like that. Package(Interface) is a collection of themes that determines the visual output and frontend functionalities of your store. An interface can be assigned on either the website-level and/or store view-level through the admin panel

While we just provide theme like JM Bookshop here, it’s just combination of layout, template, locale and/or skin file(s) that create the visual experience of your store.
