Display a list of child categories in sidebar

Hi,

I was searching for ways to show a list of child categories for a current category page. Example: Imagine a category Books with multiple sub-categories like Biography, Sci-Fi and Fantasy. How would I show these sub-categories as a list in the left sidebar with layered navigation on the books-page? An example on your demo can be seen following the link below. Was this list manually created with attributes or does it look at sub-categories of Nook Books?
