Installing Magento Sample Data – Can't Ever Get It To Work

Okay, I have tried and tried and tried, and then tried a few more times . . . . I can NEVER get the flippin’ sample data to install correctly and/or, if it ever does eventually work, get the rest of the Magento installation to proceed without a whole list of "mage" errors.

WHY on God’s green earth would the Magento people not create a ONE STEP quickstart installation that INCLUDES the sample data -- without the need to install the data first into a database before proceeding with general installation?

In any case, has ANYONE been successful with an installation of the LATEST version of Magento and sample data? If so, can you tell us how you did it, if you encountered any errors and, if so, what you did to correct them and complete the installation?

After being pretty much fed up with this, I discovered that my webhost (Siteground) finally put up a Magento auto installer WITH sample data -- saved me more days of headaches. THANK YOU, Siteground !!!

May I ask that is the benefit of sample data? I ask because I found it very simple to create a small set of sample data for my customer based on their site. There must be a benefit to beginning with sample data -- otherwise do you not need to uninstall all of the sample data before you open the site?

For myself, it’s a matter of having a "starting point" of reference for configuring things. It’s nice to see how things look and work on the formatting of it. Yes, I’m sure it’s quite easy to add products from scratch. It’s a personal preference, really -- some people like to have the starting point reference there, some do not. It’s the same with the Quickstart packages with the sample data -- it’s really just a reference starting point.
