hi, we are looking to purchase the migration tool. would this work for transferring databases to and from a staging and production server ?

Hi Paul,
Our UB Data Migration Pro supports flexible source and destination database (your source and destination db could be from different MySQL servers), so you can define any source at your choice.
Our migration tool has the Reset option that allows you to re-migrate partial data at different phases (The Reset feature will remove respective tables for re-migration). There is one note though, the destination site must be a fresh Magento 2 installation.

PS. For now, our tool is available for Magento CE 2.x only.

so will it migrate all setting from 3rd party plugins etc to the fresh install
Our tool covers the core Magento database only. For the 3rd party extensions, the shortest way is to get their M2 versions from the extension provider and install them on your new store once again.
