Can I sell e-books. Once the payment is made, an automatic download link has to go to customer.
Also can I sell subscriptions. If yes I would definetely purchase magento template

I am not 100% certain about membership / subscriptions in Magento (yet), but I do know that you can absolutely sell downloadable products with the latest Magento version release (1.2, I believe).

The membership / subscription question would be a great one for you to post on the Magento Forum Board -- if it’s not already available, I have every confidence that someone is developing an extension for such as we speak.

Checking the Magento site a bit will reveal that this option was added already in some prior releases of Magento and now also some errors that came up with it were fixed in follow-up releases.

The best is to watch the changelog frequently for added CHANGES into the system:

Yes -- VirtueMart

JoomSuite, but not free like VM, therefore better but is encrypted, not fully open-source.

Yeah you can definitely sell ebooks with Magento, I did have a few teething problems when I set up my sites but I managed to get them ironed out after a couple of days. It can be a little overwhelming with all the options available in Magento but once you get the idea of how it works you’ll never use anything else.
