I want the left hand side of my category to give the option to display "color" on the category page
how do i get this to show up?

HI fenix,
if your theme is jm_sporty then I think the mentioned block (catalog category layer) suppose to display there, make sure that you have some product attributes (for example "color" as mentioned) also in back-end of your categories, under the Display Settings panel you should select the field of Is Anchor to Yes.
