I am trying to set some products as new from xx date to xx date but Magento is not displaying the "new" string or icon. I am using Magento 1.4.2.0. is there any special instruction to follow regarding this feature?

We don’t have instruction for this but I know an extension that could help you in this case. Please try this:

That will help you to add labels to products including new label.
