I want to make overrides of template files like footer.phtml and other. But how do I do that in a way its safe to upgrade the template later on?

Please go to the file: app/design/frontend/default/jm_summer/template/page/html/footer.phtml
and edit everything you want. This is the way best safe for you when you upgrade magento.

What if I update the template? Will it be overwritten?
Hi Robert,
After customization the template, you want to upgrade template, please compare 2 files : new one and the one you modified manually to make sure the customized code willl not be removed.
